Erin O'Brien
Hey everyone! My name is Erin O'Brien. I'm a 21-year-old third year student studying Digital Marketing & Strategic Communication at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT). From the 28th of January until the 14th of April, I had the opportunity to complete a 12-week work placement as a Marketing Intern at Hub 21. As a student at DkIT, this placement was a key part of my course, but it quickly became much more than a requirement. It was a meaningful, eye-opening experience that allowed me to grow professionally and personally.
Hub 21 is a vibrant and supportive environment dedicated to supporting young people with Down Syndrome. From the moment I started, I was welcomed into a community that values inclusion, creativity, and individuality. The atmosphere was always positive, and it was clear that the work being done there has a genuine impact on the lives of the children and families who attend.
My Role as a Marketing Intern
As a Marketing Intern, my responsibilities were varied and engaging. I contributed to social media content, helped promote events, and worked on raising awareness about the programs and services offered at Hub 21. This included creating posts, brainstorming campaign ideas, and ensuring that content reflected the inclusive and empowering message of Hub 21.
This role allowed me to apply what I've learned in college to a real-world setting. I developed practical skills in digital marketing, communication, and content creation, while also learning how to adapt my approach to suit a meaningful cause. Knowing that my hard work helped highlight the achievements and activities of the children made everything feel worthwhile.
A Memorable Moment
One memorable moment that has stuck with me over the course of my 12-week placement was the planning of the 'GROW. THRIVE. SHINE.' Down Syndrome Awareness Exhibition that took place in March. I took part in this project by designing the pictures of the children that were displayed at the exhibition, and I was in charge of uploading content in relation to the project for the entire month of March.

One thing about this project that I was especially proud of was seeing the work I did on television. The exhibition was broadcasted on TG4, and seeing the hard work being shown on television gave me a strong sense of pride and I knew this was a huge achievement.
Challenges I Faced and Overcame
Like any new experience, my placement at Hub 21 came with its challenges. At the beginning, I found it slightly daunting to step into a professional environment and take on real responsibilities, especially when it came to sharing my ideas and trusting my own abilities. Adjusting to a new routine and understanding how Hub 21 operated also took time.
However, as the weeks went on, I gradually became more confident. I pushed myself to speak more during discussions and contributed creatively to marketing ideas. I also learned how to adapt to feedback and used it constructively, which helped me improve my work.
Working with Young People
Although my main focus was marketing, being at Hub 21 meant that I was always surrounded by the children who are at the heart of the hub. Observing their daily activities, creativity, and enthusiasm was incredibly inspiring. It reinforced the importance of inclusion and reminded me that everyone deserves opportunities to grow, express themselves, and be celebrated.
The staff played a huge role in creating this environment. Their dedication, patience, and positivity set the tone for everything that happens at Hub 21. I learned a lot just by observing how they communicate, support, and encourage everyone.
Personal Growth and Reflection
This place was especially meaningful to me on a personal level. As someone who has autism, I understand how important supportive and inclusive environments are. Being a part of a space like Hub 21, where differences are embraced and everyone is encouraged to thrive, strongly resonated with me.
Throughout the 12 weeks, I grew in confidence- not just in my professional abilities, but in myself. I became more comfortable sharing ideas, working as part of a team, and stepping outside of my comfort zone. The experience helped me realise the value of my own perspective and the importance of inclusivity in all areas of life, including the workplace.
Final Thoughts
My time at Hub 21 has been incredibly rewarding. It has given me valuable experience in marketing while also allowing me to be part of something truly meaningful. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such an inspiring organisation and to have met so many amazing people along the way.
This placement has not only prepared me for my future career, but has also shaped how I view inclusion, community, and the role I want to play in making a positive impact.
Thank you to everyone on the team who made this experience so memorable. I will always look back on my time at Hub 21 with appreciation and pride.
